Concavenator: Grikaa was dense and grimy, its alleys steep and narrow, paved with sharp cobblestone that gripped boots and wheels even when frozen, and shadowed by overhangs and balconies that stole each other's sunlight. Creaking carriages filled the broader streets, drawn by grunting astrapotheres at the pace of glaciers, while trained bats flittered all around with their little parcels, and strings of branded penguins were driven from market to market. The great northern sea moaned in the di…

Concavenator: The second sled search, thanks to 'Au'a the Provident, had gone much smoother than the first. Penguin bucks were not on there, but their scent was, as was guano thickly crusted on the wooden slats. Concavenator: Before the day was over, the sergeant strode in again. Her demeanor was neutral and formal, as if Kukri and Giya had been complete strangers she was now addressing for the first time, and only as required by her office. “The bats have arrived

Concavenator: The room in which Kukri and Giya were being hosted was not unpleasant, all considered. There was only one proper bed, the other being a mattress on the floor, and the ceiling was badly stained with soot, but it was warm, reasonably dry, with a comfortable table and a discreet cabinet for the chamber pot. Concavenator: The sled stood where they had last seen it, its thin mast whipping in the wind, and the furled waxed sails threatening to break their restraint. When Kukri and Giya reached it, the driver and the youth who'd called them were already hoisting two of the heavy pulling ropes on their shoulders.
